Who is Jesus? Chapter 9
Jesus is the Lamb of God
The earthly ministry of
Jesus is recorded in the four Gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.
You may wonder why there are four gospels. As we think about it, we
are reminded that in the mouth or two or three witnesses there is
truth. Many of the happenings are repeated, but some give accounts
not found in the other three gospels.
Who was the first to
proclaim who Jesus was?
Luke
2: 10-14 shares: It was an angel appearing to shepherds at the
Birth of Jesus. - -
And
the shepherds were terrified.
But
the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news
that will cause great joy for all the people. Today
in the town of David a
Savior
has been born; he is the Messiah, the Lord.
This
will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and
lying in a manger.”
Suddenly
a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel,
praising God and saying,
“Glory
to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his
favor rests.”
At
age 30 Jesus began his earthly ministry, and one day He approached
John who was baptizing in the River Jordan. John 1:29 John
Proclaimed: “Behold! The Lamb
of God who takes away the sin of the world!"
As
Jesus began to minister, very often it was in the temple. The
people were amazed at his teaching, because he taught them as one who
had authority, not as the teachers of the law. Mark
chapter one shares that evil spirits knew who Jesus was; One
day while Jesus was teaching, a man at the synagogue who was
possessed by
an impure spirit cried out, “What
do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us?
I
know who you are—the Holy One of God!” “Be
quiet!”
said Jesus sternly. “Come
out of him!”
The
impure spirit shook the man violently and came out of him with a
shriek. The
people were all both terrified and amazed that they asked each other,
“What is this? A new teaching; and with authority! He even gives
orders to impure spirits and they obey him.”
Jesus
began to select His disciples and Philip brought to him his friend
Nathaniel later named Bartholomew.
John 1:45-50 Jesus told Nathaniel, behold a man in whom is no
guile. I saw you when you were under the fig tree. At those words
Nathaniel declared: "Rabbi,
you are the Son of God; you are the king of Israel." Jesus
said, "You believe because I told you I saw you under the fig
tree. You will see greater things than this."
Jesus
went about teaching, preaching, healing the sick, and casting out
evil spirits.
This
was amazing
to the people and they brought the sick and troubled persons to Jesus
pushing and crowding him, so much so that Jesus had to find a place
in the desert or a mountain to rest and pray.
John
chapter 2 Records the first miracle at a wedding. As the celebration
lasted into the night, the hosts ran out of wine. Mary told Jesus,
but He was not concerned, however Mary urged the servants to do what
ever Jesus asked them to do. Jesus told the servants to collect the
large water pots and fill them with water. After this was done, He
then told them to take a sample to the host of the wedding. When it
was tasted, it was proclaimed, "Why have you saved the best wine
until the last."
The
disciples of Jesus were observing all Jesus was doing and they
believed
on him.
They
became "friends" with Jesus and learned to know Him in a
personal way.
Jesus desires that you too come to Him and receive Him
as your Personal Savior, Lord and friend. You can talk to Jesus as
a friend and trust Him with all your secrets. He understands and he
is there to help you be all that you can be.
He
has also promised to protect, to help and guide you and to never
leave or forsake you.
