Water Baptism “Why Be Baptized (continued) Lesson 10
Water Baptism “Why Be Baptized (continued) Lesson 10
There
are a number of reasons to be baptized in water. This lesson will
continue on the same theme; showing our Identification with Christ.
We participate in his death, burial, resurrection, separation to a
New Life in Jesus.
Buried Romans 6:4 We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.
Resurrection Romans 6:5 For if we have been united with him in the likeness of his death, we will certainly also be in the likeness of his resurrection.
Separation from the Old Life Ephesians 2:1 And you He made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins, in which you once walked according to the course of this world - -
New
Life in Christ
Romans
6:7-11 For he that is dead is
freed from sin. Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we
shall also live with him: Knowing that Christ being raised from the
dead dies no more; death has no more dominion over him. For in that
he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he lives, he lives unto
God. Likewise reckon also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but
alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Galatians 3:27 For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ, you have put on Christ.
The Name
Matthew 28:19 Go therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:
1 Corinthians 1:13 Not in John's name, or Paul's name, or your Pastor's name, but in the name of Jesus
Acts 2:38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
Acts
19:1-6 And it came to pass, that,
while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul having passed through the upper
coasts came to Ephesus: and finding certain disciples, He said unto
them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they
said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy
Ghost. And Paul said unto them, Unto what then were you baptized?
And they said, Unto John's baptism. Then said Paul, John verily
baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that
they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on
Christ Jesus.
When they heard this, they were baptized in the
name of the Lord Jesus. And when Paul had laid his hands upon them,
the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and
prophesied.
Our old nature is buried and we raise up to walk in newness of life leaving our past behind us to follow Jesus all the days of our life.
We are baptized in the Name of the Father (Lord), the Son (Jesus) and The Holy Spirit (spirit of Christ.)
FATHER (Lord) Exodus 15:2-3 The Lord is my strength and my song, and he has become my salvation; he is my God. I will praise him, and I will exalt him. The Lord is his name.
Isaiah 42:8 I am the Lord: that is my name: and my glory will I not give to another.
SON
(Jesus) Luke
1:31 (and the angel said to Mary) You
will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus.
Luke
2:21 On
the eighth day, when it was time to circumcise the child, he was
named Jesus, the name the angel had given him before he was
conceived.
HOLY SPIRIT (Spirit of Christ)
Colossians 1:27 To them God chose to make known how great are the riches of the glory of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.
John 14:17 - - - even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because the world neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you.
All Power was given unto Him : Matthew 28:18 And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.
All the fullness of the Godhead dwells in Christ. Colossians 2:9 For in him the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily - -
The fullness of the promise was not revealed until Pentecost, because Jesus must first have died, been resurrected and ascended to his place with his Father God.
Acts 2:32-33 This Jesus God raised up, and of that we all are witnesses. Being therefore exalted at the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, he has poured out this that you yourselves are seeing and hearing.
All of the Old Testament or the old contract was fulfilled in Jesus Christ.
Jesus was speaking in Matthew 5:17 Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.
Jesus said it was necessary for him to be baptized “to fulfill all righteousness”
Matthew 3:13-14 Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to John, to be baptized by him. John would have prevented him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?” But Jesus answered him, “Let it be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he consented. And when Jesus was baptized, immediately he went up from the water, and behold, the heavens were opened to him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming to rest on him; and behold, a voice from heaven said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.”
John's baptism was a Baptism of repentance for their sins. Our Christian Baptism is a symbolic example of OUR death, burial and resurrection.
There were three main steps in preparing Jesus for His ministry.
Birth. 2. Water Baptism 3. Spirit Baptism.
1 John 5:7-8 For there are three that bear witness in heaven: the Father, the Word, and the Holy Spirit; and these three are one. And there are three that bear witness on earth: the Spirit, the water, and the blood; and these three agree as one.
Every Christian needs the three fold witness in their life:
1. NEW BIRTH 2. Water Baptism 3. Holy Spirit Baptism.
This is the triune witness of God - in earth to complete every Christian.
