Baptism in the Holy Spirit - part one - Lesson 12

BAPTISM IN THE HOLY SPIRIT - Part One  -  Lesson 12   BIBLE FOUNDATIONS STUDY

After we receive Jesus Christ as our Savior, we realize He was always available as our Savior.

We just had to come to the knowledge, and then receive him, and when we did, he came to live in us, by the Holy Spirit.  It is then - - we experience “Salvation.”

The same thing applies to the Baptism in the Holy Spirit, which is a distinct and separate experience.

After we receive the Baptizer (Jesus), as our savior, we can as a believer, now receive our Baptism in the Holy Spirit. The same type of receiving action applies.

  1. Who may receive?

      a. The unsaved cannot – John 14:16-17  And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever— even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you.

                   b. Every Believer can – Acts 2:38,39  Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in water, in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. For the promise is to you and to your children, and to all who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God will call.
  1. Do we receive the Baptism of the Holy Spirit when we are saved?

All Christians receive the Holy Spirit of Christ, when they invite Jesus into their life and are “Born Again.” If this were not so, your new birth which is a spiritual birth could never take place;

(John 3:5-7)  Jesus answered, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’”

However most Christians do not receive the Baptism in the Holy Spirit at the same time of their new birth. This is not always the case as we shall soon see.

This is the way it happened to the first Christians.

a. The Apostles and first disciples.

  1. They were born of the spirit John 20:22 So Jesus said to them again, “Peace to you! As the Father has sent Me, I also send you.” And when He had said this, He breathed on them, and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit.

  2. They were promised by Jesus to be Baptized in the Holy Spirit:

Acts 1:4-8 And being assembled together with them, He commanded them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the Promise of the Father, “which,” He said, “you have heard from Me; for John truly baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.” Therefore, when they had come together, they asked Him, saying, “Lord, will You at this time restore the kingdom to Israel? And He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or seasons which the Father has put in His own authority. But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”

The Promise was fulfilled; Acts 2:1-4 When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly a sound came from heaven like the rush of a mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared to them tongues as of fire, distributed and resting on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

How it happened at Samaria:

1. They were born again; Acts 8:12 But when they believed Philip as he preached good news about the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized in water, both men and women.

2. They were Baptized in the Holy Spirit. Acts 8:14-17  Now when the apostles at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent to them Peter and John, who came down and prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit; for it had not yet fallen on any of them, but they had only been baptized in water. Then they laid their hands on them and they received the Holy Spirit.

How it happened at Ephesus

1. Born of the Spirit Acts 19:1-2 And it happened, while Apollos was at Corinth, that Paul, having passed through the upper regions, came to Ephesus. And finding some disciples he said to them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed on Jesus?”

So they said to him, “We have not so much as heard whether there is a Holy Spirit.”
2. Then they were Baptized in the Holy Spirit. Acts 19:6 And when Paul had laid hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they spoke with other tongues and prophesied.

This is not always the case because we find some who are born of the spirit and their Baptism in the Holy Spirit follows so close, it seems to have happened at the same time.

Acts 10:44-48 While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit fell upon all those who heard the word. And those of the circumcision who believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out on the Gentiles also. For they heard them speak with tongues and magnify God. Then Peter answered, “Can anyone forbid water, that these should not be baptized who have received the Holy Spirit just as we have?” And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. Then they asked him to stay a few days.

  1. What are the Requirements to receive the Baptism of the Holy Spirit?

As we have discussed, the unsaved cannot receive, however every believer in Jesus, can and should. When the “blood of Jesus, God's Son cleansed us from all sin,” that took care of the sin in our lives. We are clean! As for holiness and righteousness, we have none of ourselves, but God gives us His own righteousness, and we can't become anymore holy or any more righteousness.

2 Corinthians 5:21  For God hath made Jesus (on the cross) to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.

1 Corinthians 3:16-17 Do you not know that you are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? If anyone defiles the temple of God, God will destroy him. For the temple of God is holy, which temple you are.

Understand that God has more for you, as you continue to seek the face of Jesus - - ask and receive.

We will continue Lesson 12 “The Baptism of the Holy Spirit” - - soon.
