Baptism in the Holy Spirit Lesson 11

The Baptism of the Holy Spirit and it's outward manifestations are the introduction to the Spirit Filled life.

The Holy Spirit of Christ comes to live in you at salvation. We know Him as the in-dweller, the comforter, our teacher. In times of crises He helps you to be calm and collected, and He gives you direction on what to do and how to handle a situation.

The Baptism of the Holy Spirit is a separate and distinct experience. We will study today, and continue next lesson about this special experience that is available to all believers in Christ Jesus.

The Baptism in the Holy Spirit was prophesied and promised in the Old Testament.

Joel 2:28, 29 And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out My Spirit on all flesh; Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, Your old men shall dream dreams, Your young men shall see visions.  And also on My menservants and on My maidservants I will pour out My Spirit in those days.

Acts 2: 16-18  But this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel:

And it shall come to pass in the last days, says God, That I will pour out of My Spirit on all flesh; Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, Your young men shall see visions, Your old men shall dream dreams. And on My menservants and on My maidservants I will pour out My Spirit in those days; And they shall prophesy.

The Baptism of the Holy Spirit was also prophesied and promised in the New Testament.

    1. By John the Baptist; Matthew 3:11 Indeed I baptize you with water unto repentance, but He who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.

    2. By Jesus Luke 11:11-13 If a son asks for bread from any father among you, will he give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will he give him a serpent instead of a fish?  Or if he asks for an egg, will he offer him a scorpion?  If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!”

John 7:37-39 On the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.” But this He spoke concerning the Holy Spirit, whom those believing in Him would receive; for the Holy Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.

John 14:16-18 And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever— the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you. I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you.

Luke 24:49 Behold, I send the Promise of My Father upon you; but tarry in the city of Jerusalem until you are endued with power from on high.”

This experience of the Baptism of the Holy Spirit was received and utilized in the early church;

  1. By Jews: Acts 2:1-4 And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

The Baptism of the Holy Spirit was also received - -

  1. By Gentiles Acts 10:44-46  While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word. And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost.

For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God.

Acts 19:1-6 And it came to pass, that, while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul having passed through the upper coasts came to Ephesus: and finding certain disciples, He said unto them, Have you received the Holy Ghost since you believed? And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost. And he said unto them, Unto what then were you baptized? And they said, Unto John's baptism. Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus. When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.  And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spoke with tongues, and prophesied.

The Holy Spirit is available for ALL those who have invited Jesus into their lives, who will ask, seek knock and they shall receive - - -

  1. By both Jew and Gentiles Acts 8:14-17 Now when the apostles at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent to them Peter and John,  who came down and prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit, for he had not yet fallen on any of them, but they had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.  Then they laid their hands on them and they received the Holy Spirit.

The Baptism of the Holy Spirit is a gift given to the Church. A vital and necessary gift that every believer must have to be a successful witness for Jesus. Without the Baptism of the Holy Spirit the Christian does not have the power and ability to be a powerful witness. This is not a matter of witnessing for Jesus with just words, but the words become “anointed words” springing forth with life. It is also a matter of having your whole life on display as a witness (without words) - - - to the world of what God is doing to you, and for you and through you.

Acts 1:8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

This was given at the birth of the Church to individuals for individual ministry so that the whole Body of Christ could function as God wanted. It was not given to the Church in a collective sense, but each Christian must receive the Holy Spirit Baptism for themselves. Nor was it given only to the early Church and then removed by God. There is no scriptural evidence that God has recalled this wonderful gift. In fact, the scriptures tell us that the Baptism of the Holy Spirit is for today.

Acts 2:38,39 Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.  For the promise is to you and to your children, and to all who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God will call.”

Romans 11:29 (amp) For the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable; for He does not withdraw what He has given, nor does He change His mind about those to whom He gives His grace or to whom He sends His call.
