BIBLE FOUNDATIONS: subject: Repentance Lesson 7

Repentance is often thought of as a state of sorrow for having done wrong, and much tears. Although that has a part in repentance it is only a small part of the whole.. Repentance is a condition of the heart. A tender attitude; to actually turn and go in a different direction.

2 Corinthians 7:8-10 For even if I made you grieve with my letter of correction, I do not regret it - - for I rejoice, not because you were grieved, but because you sorrowed into repenting. For godly sorrow produces a repentance that leads to salvation without regret, where as worldly grief produces death.

To repent is to Make a Decision to:

  1. Have a change of mind. (A  resolution to change.)

  2. Have a change of attitude. (This leads to a state of penitence where our whole nature is changed to conform to God's grace and desire.)

  3. Have a change of outward actions. (Our works or outward activity will always conform to any inner change.)

Repentance is not confined to the New Testament. God had called Israel to repent, time after time.

Ezekiel 18:31-32 Put all your rebellion behind you, and find yourselves a new heart and a new spirit.  For I take no pleasure in the death of anyone, declares the Sovereign Lord. Repent and live!

2 Chronicles 7:14 If My people, who are called by My name, shall humble themselves, pray, and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven, forgive their sin, and heal their land.

Jesus began his ministry by commanding men to repent. Mark 1:14-15 Now after John was put in prison, Jesus came to Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God, saving; The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is near. Repent and believe in the gospel!”…

Many people feel they are going the right way, but they are not.

Proverbs 14:12 There is a way that seems right to a man, But its end is the way of death.

God's Word declares that if men don't repent, they will die in their sins.

Luke 13:1-5 And Jesus said to them, “Do you suppose that these Galileans were greater  sinners than all other  Galileans because they suffered this ill fate? “I tell you, no, but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish. “Or do you suppose that those eighteen on whom the tower in Siloam fell and killed them were worse culprits than all the men who live in Jerusalem? “I tell you, no, but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish.”

The repentance of one sinner causes the angels of God to rejoice.

Luke 15:10 Likewise, I say to you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.”

One of the first instructions Peter gave to the unsaved was to repent.

Acts 2:38 Peter said to them, “Repent, and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

Acts 3:17-20 “Now, fellow Israelites, I know that you acted in ignorance, as did your leaders. (to crucify Jesus) But this is how God fulfilled what he had foretold through all the prophets, saying that his Messiah would suffer.  Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord, and that he may send the Messiah, who has been appointed for you— even Jesus.

God calls everyone to repent. Acts 3:17-20 Although God overlooked the ignorance of earlier times, He now commands all people everywhere to repent.

Repentance is not a matter of what a person says they will do, but it is what they actually do.

Matthew 21:28-32 “But what do you think? A man had two sons, and he came to the first and said, ‘Son, go work today in the vineyard.’ “And he answered, ‘I will not’; but afterward he regretted it and went. “The man came to the second and said the same thing; and he answered, ‘I will, sir’; but he did not go.

Jesus asked the people; “Which of the two did the will of his father?” They said, “The first.” Jesus said to them, “Truly I say to you that the tax collectors and prostitutes will get into the kingdom of God before you. “For John came to you in the way of righteousness and you did not believe him; but the tax collectors and prostitutes did believe him and they repented; and you, seeing this,
did not even feel remorse afterward so as to believe God.

There is not true repentance unless we practice activities consistent with the repentance of our Mind and our heart.

Acts 26:19-20 So then, King Agrippa, I was not disobedient to the heavenly vision.   First to those in Damascus and Jerusalem, then to everyone in the region of Judea, and then to the Gentiles, I declared that they should repent and turn to God, performing deeds worthy of their repentance.…

Luke 3:8 NLT Prove by the way you live that you have repented of your sins and turned to God. Don’t just say to each other, ‘We’re safe, for we are descendants of Abraham.’ That means nothing, for I tell you, God can create children of Abraham from these very stones.

2 Peter 3:9 The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but He desires everyone to come to repentance.

Acts 3:19 Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord.
