Bible Foundations Chapter 28 – Subject “Satan is your Enemy”

Satan is the arch enemy of God and the church. His intent is to destroy the work of God by any means possible, therefore, we should understand just who this enemy is and how he works.

1. Who is Satan? He has several names and titles recorded in the Bible:

The devil, Beelzebub, god of this world, murderer, prince of devils, prince of this world, accuser, adversary, ruler of darkness, serpent, tempter, unclean spirit, wicked one, deceiver, father of lies.

Ezekiel 28 shares that Satan was a powerful angelic being of great beauty. But he was proud and wanted to be god.

Ezekiel 28:11-19 “You were the seal of perfection, Full of wisdom and perfect in beauty. You were in Eden, the garden of God; Every precious stone was your covering: The sardius, topaz, and diamond, Beryl, onyx, and jasper, Sapphire, turquoise, and emerald with gold. The workmanship of your timbrels and pipes Was prepared for you on the day you were created. “You were the anointed cherub who covers; I established you; You were on the holy mountain of God; You walked back and forth in the midst of fiery stones.  You were perfect in your ways from the day you were created, Till iniquity was found in you.  “By the abundance of your trading You became filled with violence within, And you sinned; Therefore I cast you as a profane thing Out of the mountain of God; And I destroyed you, O covering cherub, From the midst of the fiery stones.  “Your heart was lifted up because of your beauty;

You corrupted your wisdom for the sake of your splendor; I cast you to the ground, I laid you before kings, that they might gaze at you.  “You defiled your sanctuaries. By the multitude of your iniquities,
By the iniquity of your trading;  All who knew you among the peoples are astonished at you; You have become a horror, And shall be no more forever.” ’ ”

Satan had under his control a host of angels.

Revelations 12:7-9 And war broke out in heaven: Michael and his angels fought with the dragon; and the dragon and his angels fought, but they did not prevail, nor was a place found for them in heaven any longer. So the great dragon was cast out, that serpent of old, called the Devil and Satan, who deceives the whole world; was cast to the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.

Satan is the god and prince of this world's system.

2 Corinthians 4:4 In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.

John 14:30 - - for the ruler of this world is coming, and he has nothing in Me.

Ephesians 2:2 - - In which you once walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit who now works in the sons of disobedience - -

Satan has a kingdom.

Matthew 12:24-26 Now when the Pharisees heard it they said, "This fellow does not cast out demons except by Beelzebub, the ruler of the demons." But Jesus knew their thoughts, and said to them: "Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation, and every city or house divided against itself will not stand. If Satan casts out Satan, he is divided against himself. How then will his kingdom stand?

    2. What was Satan's sin?

His was the sin of pride, and wanting to be lifted up and to be like God the Father.

He enticed Eve with this same error in the garden of Eden.

Isaiah 14:12-17 “How you are fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! How you are cut down to the ground, You who weakened the nations! For you have said in your heart: ‘I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God; I will also sit on the mount of the congregation On the farthest sides of the north;  I will ascend above the heights of the clouds,

I will be like the Most High.’  Yet you shall be brought down to Sheol, To the lowest depths of the Pit.

“Those who see you will gaze at you, And consider you, saying: ‘Is this the one who made the earth tremble, Who shook kingdoms, Who made the world as a wilderness And destroyed its cities, Who did not open the house of his prisoners?’

  1. Satan is a real personage and not just an evil force?

He talked with God about Job.

He talked with Jesus when Jesus fasted 40 days in the wilderness; Luke 4:1-13

  2. Satan stood up against Israel.

1 Chronicles 21:1  Now Satan stood up against Israel, and moved David to number Israel.

  3. How does Satan work? He gives suggestions to our thoughts. He brings fear, doubt and unbelief. Reason is doubt in disguise. The devil will help you reason why things will not work out. The vocabulary of doubt is: But, If, How? What? I can't - -

Satan deceives:

He lied and cheated Eve and Adam and caused them to be cast out of the beautiful garden of Eden.

Satan blinds men's minds

2 Corinthians 4:3-4 whose minds the god of this age has blinded, who do not believe, lest the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine on them

Satan uses people in the midst of the church to defraud it.

Matt 13:25-28 But while men slept, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat and went his way. But when the grain had sprouted and produced a crop, then the tares also appeared.  So the servants of  the owner came and said to him, “Sir did you not sow good seed in your field? How then does it have tares?’ He said to them, ‘An enemy has done this.’

2 Corinthians 11:12-15 But what I do, I will also continue to do, that I may cut off the opportunity from those who desire an opportunity to be regarded just as we are in the things of which they boast. For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into apostles of Christ.  And no wonder! For Satan himself transforms himself into an angel of light. Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also transform themselves into ministers of righteousness, whose end will be according to their works.

Satan is the accuser of the brethren

Rev 12:10 Then I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, “Now salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of His Christ have come, for the accuser of our brethren, who accused them before our God day and night, has been cast down.

Satan steals, kills and destroys; John 10;10 The thief does not come except to steal, to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.

Satan brings sickness and infirmities

Luke 13:11-16 And, behold, there was a woman which had a spirit of infirmity eighteen years, and was bowed together, and could in no wise lift up herself.

And when Jesus saw her, he called her to him, and said unto her, Woman, you are loosed from your infirmity.  And he laid his hands on her: and immediately she was made straight, and glorified God.

And ought not this woman, being a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan hath bound, lo, these eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the sabbath day?

Satan brings fear

Romans 8:15 For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, “Abba, Father.

2 Timothy 1:7 For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.

Satan possesses men's lives and minds

Ephesians 2:2 In which you once walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit who now works in the sons of disobedience,

Luke 4:33-35 Now in the synagogue there was a man who had a spirit of an unclean demon. And he cried out with a loud voice  saying, “Let us alone! What have we to do with You, Jesus of Nazareth? Did You come to destroy us?  I know who You are—the Holy One of God!”

But Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be quiet, and come out of him!” And when the demon had thrown him in their midst, it came out of him and did not hurt him.

Satan comes sometimes as an angel of light

2 Corinthians 11:14 And no wonder! For Satan himself transforms himself into an angel of light

Satan also comes as a roaring lion

1 Peter 5:8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. Resist him, steadfast in the faith

How did Jesus confront Satan and what was the outcome?

Jesus used scriptures, and then angels came and ministered to him.

Luke 6:17-19 Jesus healed the sick and cast out demons.

Jesus overcame Satan by his death on the cross Heb 2:14-15  Inasmuch then as the children have partaken of flesh and blood, He Himself likewise shared in the same, that through death He might destroy him who had the power of death, that is, the devil, and release those who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage.

Satan was defeated by the Resurrection of Jesus 1 Cor 15:3-4 For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures,

What is our position?

Saturate yourself in the Word of God. Memorize and meditate on it.

John 8: 32  “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

We withstand and resist Satan every time we encounter him.

1 Peter 5:9 Whom resist steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world.

Ephesians 6;11  Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.

James 4:7 Therefore submit to God.  Resist the devil and he will flee from you.

1 John 2:14 I have written to you, young men, because you are strong, and the word of God abides in you, and you have overcome the wicked one.

1 John 3:8 For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil.

We overcome Satan by the Blood of Jesus and by our Words.

Rev 12:11 And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death.

John 14:12 Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father.

More than anything else, we must understand that Satan is a defeated enemy. He has NO power over the children of God. His only weapon is a lie. And we have been delivered out of his control.

Colossians 1:12-13 We give thanks to the Father who has qualified us to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in the light. He has delivered us from the power of darkness and conveyed us into the kingdom of the Son of His love
