I Want to Sit Next to You !!
I
Want to Sit Next to You !!
When
my children were very young, one of their favorite TV shows was Davy
Crockett. One day the neighbor girl came to my door, telling me that
my son had hit her. My son was usually even tempered and this was
not like him, so I asked my son, Why did you hit Gayle? He looked
at me with fierce eyes and said; “Because Gayle said was Davy
Crockett: and - - pause - - I AM DAVY CROCKETT.”
Now
they were role playing, but at times we also want to be like someone
else and not ourselves. The fact is that we can all be Davy
Crockett - - in the sense that we are all on a level plain. There is
NO competition with Jesus, and we can all be close and sit with him.
Spiritually
speaking all are invited to receive Jesus, and by our choices we
decide to follow Him, and we can all, each one of us receive the Holy
Spirit and the Gifts of the Holy Spirit. There is only requirement;
a willing mind, to listen and obey. Some find it difficult to submit
to authority, and to listen and obey, but God can not and will not
use a stubborn or rebellious person, so it is best to yield to God's
WILL. This means we come with a humble attitude knowing that God
uses our brothers and sisters too, so we are not to become jealous or
fault finding. At times there is jealousy over position, or even
toward other churches. My church is better than your church, and God
loves me more. How silly is that.
There
is only one Jesus, and although He works through us, we must always
realize that it IS HIM and not we ourselves.
In
a church service, some people like to SIT in the back row, while
others like to SIT in the front, for various reasons. When there are
revival meetings, it is good to get up close to get a good view of
what is happening, also if you are in need for yourself, you probably
need to get up front and find a good seat.
One
day Jesus overheard his disciples arguing. Each one thought they
were the greatest and better than the others.
Even
the mother of James and John asked Jesus permission for her two sons
to SIT one on his right hand and the other on his left in His
Kingdom.
What
was not understood, was that no one gets to pick their special place
in the Kingdom, it is all being assigned by God the Father.
Jesus
explained it best by requesting that a little child come to him, and
proclaimed that who ever is least in their own opinion will be
greatest in the kingdom. I am not saying that we should put
ourselves down, or think we are worthless, far from it. But our
attitude of being a servant is so important to God. We are to
consider others as able and willing to excel even above what we seem
to be doing. The Bible says, IN HONOR preferring one another. When
the young in Christ move on up higher because of their seeking God
and studying the Bible, we must rejoice and not be jealous or
envious.
It
behooves us to continually seek after the things of God and to always
learn, grow and mature ourselves. You are never too young or too old
to learn.
Jesus
often sat down to teach. When the scriptures were read the person
was standing, but when the one ministering began to speak out of
their heart they would often SIT down.
John
6:10 - Jesus said,
Have the people sit down. Now there was much grass in the place. So
the men sat down, in number about five thousand.
Luke
4:17 And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as
his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and
stood up for to read. And there was delivered unto him the
book of the prophet Isaiah. And when he had opened the book, he found
the place where it was written,
The
Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach
the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to
preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the
blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, To preach the
acceptable year of the Lord.
And
he closed the book, and he gave it again to the minister, and SAT
down. And the eyes of all them that were in the synagogue were
fastened on him. And he began to say unto them, This day is this
scripture fulfilled in your ears.
When
Jesus had accomplished all that was required of him; to be crucified,
rise from the dead, to show himself to many, to promise the Holy
Spirit, to ascend into heaven - - he then SAT down at the Fathers
right hand.
Sitting
signifies permanence. The work was done and a new covenant was here.
The
fact that Christ is "sitting" refers to the reality that
His work of redemption is done and when the fullness of the gentiles
is brought in (Romans 11:25), Christ’s enemies will be made His
footstool as the end of the age comes, all prophecy is completed, and
time is no more.
So
how can we pray over our city today? Let us understand that on our
streets there are men and women who do not realize that they are
loved by God. They are wandering and not at rest. Jesus is calling
them to come SIT and learn of Him, and to know his love and all that
he desires for them. These young and old are able to become the
preachers, teachers and ministers of tomorrow, as they sit at the
feet of Jesus.
Some
of our new believers will say, I want to sit by you and learn, will
you teach me the ways of the Lord? What will you do when they say,
I want to sit next to you? Are you ready?
